ADHD Evaluation Services: What to Expect
A comprehensive guide to ADHD evaluation services — what the process involves, how to prepare, and what happens after diagnosis.
What Is an ADHD Evaluation?
An ADHD evaluation is a comprehensive psychiatric assessment designed to determine whether a patient meets the diagnostic criteria for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Unlike a simple screening, a thorough ADHD evaluation considers the full clinical picture — ruling out conditions that mimic ADHD and identifying co-occurring conditions that may affect treatment.
At RayMex Wellness, ADHD evaluations are conducted by our board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) for children (ages 6+), adolescents, and adults.
What the Evaluation Includes
Detailed clinical interview covering current symptoms, functional impairment, developmental history, medical history, family psychiatric history, and academic or occupational performance. Validated ADHD rating scales and screening tools (such as the Vanderbilt Assessment Scales for children or the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale).
Review of past records when available — report cards, previous evaluations, and therapy notes. Collateral information from parents, teachers, or partners when appropriate. Differential diagnosis assessment to distinguish ADHD from anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, learning disabilities, and other conditions that present similarly.
Preparing for Your Evaluation
Bring any relevant records — past evaluations, report cards, school accommodations documentation. For children and teens, have a parent or guardian present. Consider asking teachers or employers to complete rating scales in advance if provided. Write down your main concerns, symptoms, and questions beforehand.
Plan for the evaluation to take approximately 60-90 minutes for the initial visit. A follow-up visit may be scheduled to review results and discuss the treatment plan.
After the Evaluation
Following the evaluation, your provider will share the diagnostic findings and develop a personalized treatment plan. If ADHD is diagnosed, treatment options include stimulant and non-stimulant medications, behavioral strategies, school or workplace accommodation recommendations, and referrals for therapy if indicated.
