Behavioral Concerns in Children: When to Seek a Psychiatric Evaluation
All children misbehave sometimes, but persistent behavioral concerns may indicate an underlying condition. Learn when a psychiatric evaluation is warranted.
Normal Behavior vs. Behavioral Concerns
All children test boundaries, have occasional tantrums, and go through difficult phases. This is a normal part of development. Behavioral concerns become clinically significant when they are persistent (lasting weeks or months), severe (disproportionate to the situation), pervasive (occurring across multiple settings), and impairing (affecting school, friendships, or family life).
Common conditions that can present as behavioral concerns include ADHD, anxiety disorders, depression, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and autism spectrum disorder. Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment.
Common Behavioral Concerns by Age
School-Age Children (6-12): Persistent defiance or argumentativeness, difficulty following rules at home and school, frequent meltdowns beyond developmental norms, aggression toward peers or siblings, difficulty sustaining attention or completing tasks, social difficulties.
Adolescents (13-17): Oppositional behavior, academic decline, social withdrawal, risk-taking behavior, substance experimentation, dramatic mood shifts, school refusal, self-harm.
The Role of Psychiatric Evaluation
A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation can identify whether behavioral concerns are related to an underlying mental health condition. The evaluation includes a thorough clinical interview with parents and the child, developmental history review, validated screening tools, and observation of the child’s behavior and presentation.
Based on the evaluation, our PMHNP develops a personalized treatment plan that may include medication management, behavioral recommendations, and referrals for therapy.
