Spravato (Esketamine): New Hope for Treatment-Resistant Depression

If you have tried two or more antidepressants and still feel stuck, you are not alone — and you are not out of options. About one in three people with depression do not get full relief from standard medications. This is called treatment-resistant depression. At RayMex Wellness, we want you to know there is real, science-backed hope. One of the newest tools we can talk about is Spravato (esketamine).

What Is Spravato?

Spravato is the brand name for esketamine, a nasal spray approved by the FDA for adults with treatment-resistant depression. It is also approved for depression with suicidal thoughts. Unlike a pill you take at home, Spravato is given in a certified medical setting where you are monitored by a healthcare team.

Esketamine is related to ketamine, a medicine that has been used safely in hospitals for decades. What makes it special is how it works in the brain — and how quickly it can help.

How Is It Different From Regular Antidepressants?

Most antidepressants work on brain chemicals called serotonin and norepinephrine. They can take four to six weeks to make a real difference. That is a long time to wait when you are hurting.

Spravato works differently. It targets a brain chemical called glutamate and helps the brain rebuild connections between cells. For some people, relief can begin within hours or days rather than weeks. That speed can be life-changing, especially for someone in deep pain.

Who Might Be a Good Fit?

Spravato is not usually the first thing we try. It is designed for people who:

  • Have major depressive disorder confirmed by a full evaluation
  • Have tried at least two antidepressants at proper doses without enough relief
  • Are ready for in-office treatment with monitoring

  • During your evaluation at RayMex Wellness, we review your full history, current medications, and health conditions to see whether Spravato could be a safe and helpful option for you.

    What to Expect During Treatment

Because Spravato is given in a supervised setting, each visit follows a careful routine:

  • You use the nasal spray yourself, guided by your provider
  • You rest comfortably while we monitor you for about two hours
  • You will need someone to drive you home afterward
  • Treatments usually start twice a week, then space out over time

  • Some people feel a temporary sense of floating, mild dizziness, or a dreamy feeling during the session. These effects fade before you leave. Our team stays with you the whole time so you always feel safe.

    Does It Really Work?

Clinical studies show that many people with treatment-resistant depression who add Spravato to an oral antidepressant experience meaningful improvement. It is not a magic cure, and results are different for everyone. We never promise a specific outcome. What we do promise is honest guidance, close monitoring, and a plan built around you.

    What About Cost and Access?

Spravato is only available through a special FDA safety program (called REMS) at certified providers. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary widely depending on your insurance and situation, so we always encourage you to verify your specific benefits before starting. Our team can help you understand the process and what questions to ask.

You Deserve Care That Keeps Looking for Answers

Depression that has not responded to treatment can make you feel forgotten by the system. In many communities — including African, Caribbean, immigrant, and faith-centered families — there can be extra pressure to “just push through.” You do not have to push through alone. Seeking advanced care is a sign of strength, not weakness. If faith is part of your life, it is always welcome in your care, never required.
